Catching Waves During COVID Pandemic
Written by Michelle Chang: 2107 Citizen Science GIS REU Alumnus
I am a former REU student on the Marine Debris Team. As I reflect on my experience with Citizen Science GIS, I am filled with so many wonderful memories of Hopkins and my cohort. I remember waking up at 5 am every morning before our long days of collecting data to catch the sunrise and watch the waves rush ashore. This morning routine grounded me as it served as a reminder of gratitude. I am grateful for the opportunity to be able to do research for the community and share it with them.
I loved sharing my enthusiasm about science with the youth and becoming inspired by hearing the visions and impacts they hope to have on their community.
My experience working with Citizen Science GIS reminded me of my power in making a positive impact on the world around me. In a social unjust world where communities in need lack opportunities to flourish, I am further motivated to be an agent of change and work towards a better future for all humanity.
In the midst of COVID-19, I wanted to make a difference on communities across the country, thus, I became a Crisis Counselor for the Crisis Text Line.
This role allowed me to work with diverse and vulnerable populations in their darkest times, while destigmatizing mental health. Through having intimate conversations, making safety plans, or going through next step coping strategies, I found this experience rewarding as I supported individuals and instilled hope. During this time of uncertainty, I want to use this post as a reminder that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, so keep chasing your dreams and fighting for what you believe in!
